What to bring to Hospital:

  • Medicare card/ Pension card/ Health Insurance card/ Vet affairs card, any pharmaceutical benefits entitlement card
  • X-rays (if relevant)
  • dressing gown and slippers
  • medications (including puffers)
  • any letter or forms your Doctor has given you
  • money or bank card if discharge medications are ordered.

What NOT to bring:

  • jewellery, valuables or large sums of money
  • pyjamas/nightie
  • mobile phone

Before your operation:

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight if your procedure is being done in the morning.
  • Do not eat or drink after 7.00am if your procedure is being done in the afternoon.
  • Shower the morning of your procedure.
  • Remove all make-up and nail polish.
  • Do not use powder, deodorant or perfumes.
  • Do not smoke, or drink alcohol 24 hours prior to your procedure.
  • A nurse will phone you the evening prior to your procedure (Friday evening for Monday bookings) to go through last minute details and give you a time to arrive at the Day Procedure Unit and an approximate discharge time. If you will not be at home for the telephone call, please ring us after 4.00pm.
  • Your current medications will be checked and the nurse will inform you which ones to take prior to your procedure.

What to expect:

  • Upon arrival you will be greeted by Clerical/Nursing staff who will direct you to the waiting area.
  • Clerical staff will check your personal details (ie: phone number and address) and ask you to sign an admission form.
  • Nursing staff will ask for details about your medical history, check your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and weight. An identification bands will be placed on your leg and arm.
  • It is also likely that an Anaesthetist will see you in the Day Procedure Unit prior to your procedure.
  • As there may be a waiting period involved, please bring a book or something to read. We offer magazines, music and/or television.
  • As there are no child facilities at the Day Procedure Unit, if you bring children with you, please ensure they are supervised at all times.
  • Nearing the time for your procedure, you will be changed into a gown and your clothing and personal belongings will be placed into a locker.
  • All patients are transported to the operating suite on a trolley, escorted by a nurse. Patients younger than 18 years also require their parent or guardian to accompany them to theatre.

On return from theatre to the Day Procedure Unit

  • You will either remain on your trolley or be assisted into a recliner chair, depending upon the nature of your procedure.
  • Your pulse and blood pressure will be monitored at regular intervals.
  • If you have any pain or nausea, medication will be given where appropriate.
  • A drink and light snack will be provided before you are discharged, if appropriate. Any dietary requirements should be mentioned on admission.
  • You may be offered a shower or a wash prior to leaving the Day Procedure Unit.
  • On discharge, you will receive instructions specific to your procedure and if necessary a follow-up appointment with your doctor.
  • The day following your procedure a phone call is usually made to check on your recovery and to answer any questions you may have.
  • You should be aware that you will be at the hospital for a period of 3-8 hours, depending upon the surgery/procedure you have, how well you recover and whether there have been emergency procedures interrupting operative lists.

Finally, you must have someone to drive you home and care for you for at least 12 hours after your anaesthetic.
